Brief History And Career Beginnings
Jennifer Lopez was born to Puerto Rican parents David and Guadalupe Lopez. She has an older and a younger sister. Jennifer's parents lived in a small apartment and few years after Jennifer was born they were able to purchase a two-story house. Lopez began taking singing and dancing lessons at the age of 5. She was also encouraged by her parents to sing and dance at home which her parents believe would help keep she and her siblings out of trouble. During her last year in high school Jennifer auditioned to play in a low-budget film 'My Little Girl' in 1986. She got the role to play Myra a young woman at a center for troubled girls.
After Lopez successfully acted in the film she realized she wanted to become a big movie star. Lopez told her parents her dreams but they doubted saying it can't happen. Lopez later moved to her own apartment in Manhattan where she performed in musicals Jesus Christ, Superstar and Oklahoma. In 1991 Lopez got to work as as a Fly Girl dancer on the television comedy program In Living Color. She remained on the show until 1993. After leaving the show, Lopez became a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and appeared in Janet's video "That's the Way Love Goes".
Lopez then pursued her acting career and got professional roles in films such as Lost in the Wild (1993) and in 1994 she starred as Melinda Lopez in the CBS television series Second Chances and Hotel Malibu. She later got bigger film roles. In 1995 she starred in drama My Family and later starred in Money Train longside Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. In 1996, she won the chance to play a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola's 1996 comedy 'Jack' starring Robin Williams. She then starred opposite Jack Nicholson in Bob Rafelson's well-received noir thriller Blood and Wine (1996). Lopez's first big break came in 1996, when she was chosen to play the title role in Selena, a biopic of the deceased pop singer Selena.
